| dcterms.abstract | The purpose of this study is to explore the moral voices of the pregnant teenagers during the decision making of the fetus and the experience of the changed relationship after pregnancy. The results will bring insights to the social services in Hong Kong. A qualitative cases study approach is adopted in this dissertation. Four respondents are chosen. Data is collected through the in-depth interviews with the question guided. Tape recording is used to enhance the accuracy of the dissertation. The results show that the relationship of the pregnant teenagers with others and the self worth of themselves are the major factors which influence their moral development. During the decision making process of pregnancy, three of the respondents are basically egocentric in their decision making process. Only one respondent sacrifices her choices of husband due to the care for the baby. But after the decision making of the fetus, all respondents experience their relationships with their significant people such as their parents, parents-in-law, boyfriends and their babies have changed. This changed relationship affects their moral thinking. It is concluded that pregnant teenagers' connectedness with others and the awareness of the significance of self worth bring about the changes in the pregnant teenagers' moral thinking. Suggestions on helping the teens can be drawn up on handling the problem of teenage pregnancy. The are the following five areas. (A) Promotion of sex education in school and family. (B) Empowerment of the teenagers through individual and group counseling. (C) Advocating the status of women by expanding the choice of vocational training, endorsing equal opportunity acts and providing placement in schools after giving birth. (D) Adopting the broad-based assessment from different sources including parents, guardians, the father of the unexpected child, peers, siblings or adults in other systems, such as schools. (E) Providing tangible services to the young mothers like courses on the mothering skills and financial help. | en_US |
