dcterms.abstractAn increase in global demands for environmental awareness and expectancy has brought about the development and implementation of various standards such ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS). Furthermore, the construction industry has a significant effect upon the environment. To cope with the global trend and environmental protection, ISO 14001 EMS is a good management tool for the construction industry. This project investigates the critical factors for ISO 14001 EMS implementation for the construction industry in Hong Kong and provides recommendations for effective implementation and continual improvement. An extensive literature review on the related issues is carried out. The general view of the building professionals towards the implications and critical factors of ISO 14001 EMS implementation in the local construction industry is obtained from the questionnaire survey. Based on the finding in this dissertation, it is concluded that the most critical factors affecting successful implementation of ISO 14001 EMS in the local construction industry are top management commitment, market pressures, preventive actions, existence of environmental regulations, regular management review; roles, responsibilities, authorities of staff; environmental operational target; education and training; environmental policy; and operational processes and procedures.en_US
