Abstract: Nowadays, electronic products are more compact than before. A consequence of this shrinking technology is, more and more irregular PCBs are used in these electronic products. Engineers of electronic manufacturers, when designing a PCB panel layout with an irregular shape PCB, have to pay special care so that the panel layout is efficient in terms of material utilization out of a piece of raw PCB material. To achieve this, the PCB panel design process involves a lot of repetitive calculations and trial and error type of jobs that engineers considered as boring and only require low level of intelligence. In this dessertation, an AI based production system is proposed to automate this panel design process. A panel layout generating algorithm is developed. The algorithm mimics the mental process of an engineer in making a panel layout design, matching geometrical features of the irregular PCB to find the minimum area location when a new PCB unit is placed into the layout. The algorithm generates different layout possibilities when each new PCB unit is placed and forms a state space. The production system then uses a best-first-search algorithm to find in the state space the optimised panel layout with maximum material utilization. A prototype production system is built using Arity Prolog. With different irregular test PCBs, the system is proven to be able to generate an optimized panel layout efficiently.
