Social support as moderator of life satisfaction and unemployment stressen_US
Unemployment rate in western countries has increased in recent years. This waves of recession has emerged in Hong Kong as well. From tradional study it seems increased stress will be experienced by those unemployed. Judging from the phenomenon of increasing rate of suicides, and the gap in the past research, this study aims to investigate the correlation between employment stress and life satisfaction. The moderating role to unemployment stress and direct impact of social support to life satisfaction is also tested. Demographic variables are also tested in their correlation to unemployment stress. In view of focus on the local context, about 200 unemployed workers were sampled. The result does not support the hypothesis that unemployment is correlated to life satisfaction. However, the hypotheses of moderating role of social support and positive correlation with life satisfaction was partially supported. A cross-sectional perspective of social support and life satisfaction examining different profiles is highlighted. Certain demographic variables were found correlated with unemployment stress also. The research, apart from these, does open area which might need further probing in cross-sectional view of social support and life satisfaction. A cross-national study is also a possible extention of the study focused on local context now.en_US
