Abstract: This dissertation studies the theory of rule-based expert system. It introduces the characteristics of flight control system (FCS) fault diagnosis, and analyses the current maintenance status of the airplane FCS. In this dissertation, the structure, design idea and method of rule-based diagnosis system according to ground fault diagnosis are discussed. The function of each module, knowledge representation method and reasoning strategy are also discussed in detail. About 100 rules of this expert system are refined from the large amount of related documents, and are provided in the end. This expert system for flight control is a good example of what and how an expert system can do to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of FCS fault diagnosis. On the whole, it is a successful and fruitful experience in consolidating the art of information system with the science of uncertainty reasoning in a practical problem domain. For the time constraint, so far it only covers three sub-systems of un-inhabited aircraft vehicle (UAV) FCS. A full-scaled development of the FCS fault diagnosis expert system is highly recommended and will definitely lead to a brand-new approach of fault diagnosis. It will provide the FCS maintenance centre a powerful technical support. By this expert system, the failure part and failure reason are confirmed, diagnosis conclusion and maintenance suggestion are provided to improve the accuracy and efficiency of FCS failure diagnosis.
