dcterms.abstractFacilities Management, which is regarded to be the catalysts for the achievement of business objectives, has been emerged from United States and has already been well known as a profession since 1970's where recognized certification system and qualified educational programmes have been substantially established. Over the past decade of years, Facilities Management has also regarded to be rapidly grown and developed among Asian countries including Hong Kong. More and more professional institutes as well as academic institutes participated progressively for the promotion and development of Facilities Management among Hong Kong building and real estate sector in Hong Kong. Though Facilities Management has been introduced, it is observed that most building professionals still treat building or facility traditionally as technical-oriented liabilities, and administrative overheads or expenses aimed to be minimized. And, they usually overlooked it as a source of competitive advantage from business perspective. It is believed that there is still a prominent segregation existed between what institutes promoted and what professionals perceived. As the recent significant development of Facilities Management in Hong Kong associated with the phenomena of above-mentioned segregation and the capabilities of facilities managers give incentive to this study. In short, FOUR main objectives:- (i) to have an overview to the recent academic and professional development of Facilities Management in the Hong Kong building and real estate sector; (ii) to examine the understanding and familiarization of Facilities Management among building professionals in Hong Kong; (iii) to identify core competencies and characteristics of facilities manager; and (iv) to make recommendations for further development of Facilities Management in Hong Kong building and real estate sector. are addressed via a statistical survey, a comprehensive review and a questionnaire research. Concisely, coupled with encouraging and attractive career prospect people are optimistic towards FM future development and they are willing to explore their exposure in FM field in the future. Nonetheless, with more and more opportunities to pursue higher education attainment as well as to acquire recognized professional qualification in accordance with the changes of society and economic environment in Hong Kong, FM's potential of becoming remarkable profession among building and real estate sector should not be underestimated.en_US
