Concurrent validation of the Adolescent Health Quotient Questionnaire (AHQQ)en_US
OBJECTIVES: To establish the reliability and concurrent validity of the Adolescent Health Quotient Questionnaire (AHQQ) with the Adolescent Lifestyle Questionnaire (ALQ) (Gillis, A., 1997) and to investigate the appropriateness and usability of the health quotient tool for adolescents in Hong Kong, with the aims at being widely used in Chinese culture. DESIGN: A cross-sectional correlation design was used to test the concurrent validity of the AHQQ with the ALQ. Concurrent validity was tested by examining the correlation, or estimated degree of relationship, between the AHQQ and the ALQ which is an existing scale with an established validity. SETTING: A secondary school in Hong Kong at Kwun Tong District during the Physical Exercise lesson. SUBJECTS: 101 subjects with age ranged from 12 to l9 years of age and with classes from S2, S4 and S7 were recruited. RESULTS: Factor analysis of the AHQQ with resulting 26-item instrument yielded a six-factor solution with an explained variance of 57% and the internal consistency of the total instrument with an alpha coefficient of 0.57. Spearman Correlation examined the correlation of the factors between the two instruments. The results showed moderate correlation in which three out of the six-factors yielded the correlation coefficients more than 0.3 and above, with statistically significant at the p< 0.05 level. CONCLUSION: The AHQQ is a valid tool and is valuable for assessing the health profile of the adolescents in Hong Kong. Further validity and reliability studies with larger study group are needed to ascertain the generalization of the findings.en_US
