dcterms.abstract | Academic research in university becomes increasingly important as it can be commercialized through technology transfer. As university research is going to be one of the driving forces in economy growth, academic entrepreneurship (AE) becomes one of the hot topics nowadays. AE has long been recognized as economic development factor by foreign countries government. Thus, they try to encourage AE by promoting entrepreneurship programs and establishing incubation centers. The purpose of this research project is to study to the AE in the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, i.e. try to find out the factors affecting academia venture startup. The data collection method is done by face-to-face interview with the venture founders. Five venture founders are invited for interview in this study. Data is analysis by studying and comparing their idea mentioned from the interview. The result shows that for an venture creation success, a number of factors have to be possessed or considered, i.e. individual, team of expertise, motivation, environment, process and timing. Missing any one of these six factors may result in slow venture creation or even unsuccessful venture formation. Besides, the result shows that the research technology is the key component for the survival of venture. Sex, age, and parents background do not affect the intention for venture startup. Another interesting result is that the gain from venture creation is not monetary but experience and team achievement. Recommendations have been made to the universities who are going to and currently implement entrepreneurship program. Suggestions have also been made to the HKSAR government in promoting the entrepreneurship in Hong Kong. | en_US |
