|Title:||3-D simulation of hydrodynamics and sediment transport in the Pearl River estuary||en_US|
|Abstract:||A 3D finite element computer model, is used to investigate the transport of the suspended sediment subjected to the tidal current, Coriolis force and water density in the Pearl River Estuary. For understanding the behaviour of the suspended sediment transport, it is necessary to have more information about the sediment concentration and current movement in water column. The sediment concentration in the Pearl River Estuary depends on the discharge from rivers and ocean. Many factors such as tides and water density may change the current movement in the estuary. The water density is varied with pressure, salinity and water temperature. However the pressure can be neglected in shallow coastal area. Sea water temperature can be calculated by the Joint Panel on Oceanographic tables and standards (UNESCO 1981). The sea temperature can be gained or lost by vertical energy transfer between sea surface and air. The vertical energy transfer can be described by the net upward or downward surface heat flux. For obtaining the net surface heat flux, a computer program is written and a set of data obtained from H.K. Royal Observatory among 1990 and 1994 is chosen for this computer simulation. Finally, the data between 3/11/1993 and 5/11/1993 are used. The maximum heat flux escaping from sea to air is approximately 700 W/m2. By calculation, the temperature lost from sea to air is insignificant and the heat exchange factor can be neglected. Thus uniform sea temperature is used for the water column. The initial salinity follows the suggestion of Ridley & Thomas (1985). The simulation results of the surface current and suspended sediment flux affected by salinity and Coriolis force are analysed. The movement of the surface current is found in general agreeing with the previous documented investigations. The suspended sediment fluxes moves in and out the estuary through Macau and western Lantau Island and this causes the surface water is brown colour.||en_US|
