Pressure drop of axial flow particulate trap for diesel engineen_US
This project aims to study the pressure drop across a particulate trap which is designed to be used in the exhaust system of diesel engine. The particulate trap is used to filter the particulate which is generated during the combustion process inside the diesel engine. It is one of the means to reduce the emission of particulate from the diesel engine. A prototype particulate trap is designed for experimental use in this project. This prototype particulate trap is made up of a steel pipe of about 100mm in diameter and 300mm in length. Rectangular stainless steel wires are used for the filter media. Perforated plates are used as the holder of the filter media. Two separate experiments, cold flow using air at room temperature and exhaust flow using exhaust from a diesel engine, were carried out. Curve fitting techniques are used in the analysis of the experimental results. It is found that for both cold and exhaust flow, the pressure drop across the trap has a quadratic relationship with the velocity, a second order relationship with the packing density and a linear relationship with the filter thickness. Also it is shown that a cold flow test may be used to determine the pressure drop in actual exhaust condition.en_US
