Factors affect secondary school teachers' intention to quit their present schools and quit the teaching professionen_US
This research aims at investigating the impact of job satisfaction and commitment to both the schools and the teaching profession on the intention to quit their present schools and leave the profession among secondary school teachers in Hong Kong. Demographic, organizational and job factors were tested on the effect of job satisfaction and commitment. Questionnaires were issued to teachers of eight secondary schools. On analysis of 167 samples, it was found that 19.5% of respondents had the intention to quit their present schools, while 10.2% indicated that they intended to leave the teaching profession. They were most satisfied with their colleagues and pay. Their affective evaluation on principals and students tended to be neutral. They were most dissatisfied with the limited promotional opportunities. In multiple regression, overall job satisfaction was found to be a significant predictor of intention to quit present schools and teaching profession. Affective organizational commitment was another factor which had impact on intention to leave present schools. Less administrative workload, greater amount of job autonomy, and reduced role ambiguity were found to increase overall job satisfaction. Older teachers experienced higher job satisfaction and organizational affective commitment than younger ones. Teachers had stronger affective organizational commitment in smaller schools. Professional commitment was found not to be a predictor of intention to leave teaching profession.en_US
