dc.title | A validation study of the self-administered carpal tunnel syndrome questionnaire (Chinese version) | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | The Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questionnaire (CTSQ) is self-administered questionnaire for assessment of severity of symptoms and functional status of carpal tunnel syndrome cases. It can be used in adjunct to the traditional neuromuscular assessment in providing information on disability related to the disease. This study aims to develop and validate a Chinese version of the CTSQ for use in Hong Kong. Content validity of the translated instrument CCTSQ was evaluated through an expert panel review. Ninety-eight subjects with carpal tunnel syndrome were recruited in the study of construct validity and evaluation of reliability. Exploratory factor analysis of the CCTSQ revealed a 3 factor-structure, which include the functional status, pain symptom and numbness symptom factors. Scores of the original 2-factor structure of CCTSQ 'Symptom Severity' and 'Functional Status' scales had moderate to high correlations with convergent constructs like pain, physical functioning and physical role subscale, and had low correlations with divergent constructs such as the mental health subscale of SF36. Relationship of the 2 subscale with objective assessment of power grip and pinch grip strength was moderate to low, which indicated that CCTSQ measures constructs different from physical impairment. Reliability study showed that CCTSQ subscales are highly internally consistent (Cronbach alpha of symptom severity scale = 0.88; Cronbach alpha of functional status scale = 0.90). Besides, test-retest reliability for both subscales is also high with symptom severity scale ICC = 0.84 whereas functional status scale ICC = 0.81. The Chinese version of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questionnaire is considered a valid and reliable instrument for local use in Hong Kong. | en_US |
