The application of digitizing in building precision injection molden_US
Digitizing is, basically, divided into three types, mechanical analogue, laser and video. Analogue digitizer is most commonly used because of its affordable price and user friendly design. It's widely used in Reverse Engineering in product design. In this dissertation. Reverse Engineering concept is applied to build precision injection molds. Tooling epoxy duplicated from sculptured pattern is digitized, the point model is translated into curve and surface model. Then the surface model is edited by a CAD software and a CNC cutting path is generated. Finally, the cavities and cores of the mold are machined by a CNC-Milling machine and/or EDM machine. This dissertation is essentially practical in nature focusing in designing a manufacturing process using digitizing technology in building precision mold. A program for calculating digitizing settings from input data is written and then the captured data is verified by case studies. SURFACER and UG II software, LEMOINE digitizer, DECKEL CNC-Mill, MAKINO EDM, 486 PC and SGI Indigo II hardware are used in the case study. The process of mold making using digitizer is presented step by step so that it can be easily understood. Practical work needed to be done on the pattern before digitizing is described in details. A significant improvement in quality and a reduction in cost can be achieved by using the new process in building molds. With the support from digitizer suppliers in Hong Kong, a bench marking on 3 common digitizing systems is held. Although the result is not too successful it can demonstrate the pros and cons in using different systems.en_US
