Abstract: In this research, the author proposed a model for MRP II design and implementation which is aimed to achieve manufacturing excellence. The proposed model was investigated and developed through a case study on the journey to excellence launched in a model factory. The model factory uses a job shop layout to produce customized products. The journey started with a collaborative project to implement a donated MRP II system in the model factory, and expected to end at a CIM system incorporating world class manufacturing framework. The model blending the proven implementation methodology, problem solving technique, performance measurement, reengineering effort, systematic modeling tool with the small step continuous improvement cycle was proposed to guide the model factory through the journey. Verification on the proposed model led to performance improvement in the operation of the model factory. The reengineering effort was proven to be useful in preparing the model factory for the journey. The systematic modeling tool was helpful in MRP II and FMS integration to close the loop between operation planning and control. The proposed model is found to furnish with solutions to many problems encountered in the journey to excellence. It is hoped that it can also provide guidance to those manager who are planning to launch the journey in their own plant.
