Abstract: China's hotel and tourism industry has a great need for competent staff in the workplace. However, research showed that employers are not satisfied with the general skills of hotel and tourism management (HTM) graduates. In other words, university or college education may not meet the industry requirements. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of gap between educators and industry professionals in terms of their perception of competencies required for hotel and tourism management graduates. Through the investigation of HTM graduates' general skill requirements in the workplace, suggestions were made to develop a more relevant higher education curriculum so that skills learned in colleges and universities match the needs of the industry. Data were collected via questionnaire survey from 148 tourism educators and hotel managers. Hotel manager respondents were asked to rate the importance of general skills required at the workplace and graduates' performance level of those general skills; educator respondents rated the level of teaching for the same set of general skills. Six competency dimensions (including 23 questionnaire items), namely interpersonal relationship, management, technical skills, communication, service skills and sales skills, were examined in the study. Among these six dimensions, the biggest gap between educators and employers was identified in the graduates' management skills, followed by sales skills and interpersonal relationship. A significant relationship was identified between graduates' sales skills and their competitive advantage in the hotel industry. The study findings would be beneficial to HTM educators as a reference for future planning. Educators should make appropriate administrative decisions in revising the curriculum to close the gap identified and provide competent and competitive graduates for the hotel and tourism industry. Suggestions for curriculum revisions were made.
