| Abstract: | The world is experiencing a massive population shift. The infant birth rate has gone down and rates of aging group increasing. Elderly women are concerning with their life quality and prefer to improve their living standard on clothing. This dissertation is to study the clothing needs of elderly women in terms of physiological and psychological needs with garment safety. Clothing comfort can be partly describe the meaning of clothing needs. It is easier to describe discomfort more than comfort. Combining all the different view of comfort, it can be described in Psychological discomfort and Physiological discomfort. Psychological discomfort are affected by color, garment styles, fashion, fabric construction, finishes, suitability for an occasion and prejudice that it would be discussed though questionnaire survey. Physiological discomfort can be divided into Sensorial, Thermophysiological discomfort and garment fit. Biomechanics, Locomotion and Somatotype are the factors to consider on garment fit for elderly women. This dissertation has evaluated all the mechanics on human body and motion, self-produced movement and different types of body configuration and how they can affect the garment fittings on elderly women. For those disability elderly women group, special feature of the garment need to redesign such as underwear, slip, outerwear, fastener and adaptation selection and it has been investigated in this report. This dissertation is also trying to analysis buying behavior, social value, purchasing power and social status for elderly women market through questionnaire. Safety garment is an important issue for elderly women especially flammability. For the current international flammability standard, most of them are concentrated on children's wear. It is also important for elderly women especially the disable group and some of them are disability on body movement. It should be the same standard as children's sleep wear. This dissertation is to analysis the polyester fabric flammability standard and how important for elderly women clothing should meet the tighten standard of flammability test. Seam test with sewing thread selection is also the factor to affect flammability. It was found that the fabric can pass the CFR1615/1616 flammability standard after the polyester fabric treated with flame retardant finish with special sewing thread in affordable cost. In conclusion, This dissertation was investigating the clothing needs for the elderly women, their buying behavior, purchasing power and social value. Other than that, flammability is the one of the safety issue for elderly women. |
