Abstract: The networking paradigm today to supporting client-server, bandwidth hungry, multi-media applications is exposing the inherent limitation of today's shared LAN environment:- - Performance bottlenecks, - Increasing cost of operation, - Growing complexities of managing the network & - Lack of scaleability for high bandwidth requirement. High speed networking technology like ATM has been suggested to meet the legacy LAN challenges and build large, high performance, multimedia support, complex network. However, the technology are not likely to be fully mature and widely implemented until 1996 or beyond. A standards based solution that currently available to alleviate network problems and provides future migration path to ATM is called LAN Switching [3COM 95a],[UBNE 95]. Facing with such a transition to future ATM network , this project investigates and discusses various aspects of network planning, design, implementation methodologies & performance evaluation for today large scale Facility Wide Campus Network (FWCN). The application of these methodologies realized in the implementation of the FWCN for Lingnan College (LNC) new campus at Tuen Mun. The methodologies/technologies being investigated and applied in this paper includes:- LAN switching intermixing with routing for network architectural design, application of LAN switching in the design of Client/Server network to solve the problems of legacy LAN, LAN segmentation & Virtualization (call VLAN), network security & steps for migration to ATM switch centre campus network will be addressed. Quantitative analysis for network latency of the LNC new campus network modeling and analysis different alternatives for designing today's high performance network technologies will also be discussed.
