Natural smoke filling process in atriaen_US
Natural smoke filling in atria induced by a fire was studied. Calculations based upon published research results were reviewed in atrium and elsewhere for the analysis of a large-scale room fire test. Full-scale burning tests were carried out at the PolyU/USTC Atrium. The overall size of the atrium is of length 30 m, width 18 m and height 30 m. Experiments with a pool fire placed in the atrium floor were performed. Temperatures at different heights were measured using two thermo-couple trees at the two corners of the atrium. A visualization technique was applied to observe the smoke movement pattern and smoke filling process in the atrium space. Further, natural ventilation with smoke vents was also studied. A novel technique for generating a thin smoke layer is described. Interesting results were found, for example, measured temperature was fairly uniform at higher levels closed to the ceiling. As for the natural vents, it took about 390s in a certain test for the smoke to reach the bottom level without any opening. However, the time was extended to 450s when the ceiling vents were all opened.en_US
