dc.title | Quality management system in the Hong Kong construction industry using ISO 9000 system | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | ISO 9000 system has become an accepted basis of quality system requirements for many fields of work in the world. The Hong Kong construction industry is no exception. The Hong Kong Housing Authority took an initial drive to require contractors to be accredited to the ISO 9000 system prior to award of construction contracts to contractors. The survey conducted for this research focused mainly on companies which have ongoing projects in civil, building, and maintenance work. The findings indicate that the Hong Kong construction industry has adopted the ISO 9000 standards as a basis of quality system, and as a consequence, the quality concept and culture has been improved. Although the ISO 9000 quality system has been now accepted in the construction industry, improvement in many areas can still be made. Recommendations to improve the system are made and the Total Quality Management (TQM) is seem to be a solution to the shortcomings of ISO 9000 system. Another positive finding from this study was that many companies (80% of interviewees) used ISO 9000 quality system for their project management. This finding indicated that companies in Hong Kong considered ISO 9000 standards not just for quality assurance system but also for project management system with some modifications. It was found that the system was functioning effectively and efficiently. | en_US |
