dcterms.abstract | "Logistics" has been a buzzword in the business community of Hong Kong nowadays after the advocacy in the 5th Policy Address of the Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The Chief Executive has suggested to develop Hong Kong as a regional logistics hub linking the Chinese Mainland and the rest of the world. This suggestion has great impact on the service providers in the transport logistics sector for supply chain management (see Figure 1 on page 3). Knowing that the traditional transport/freight forwarding services can no longer satisfy the escalating needs of users of logistics services, many freight forwarders in Hong Kong have taken necessary action, whether proactive or passive, to implement organizational and operational restructuring to respond to the impact of the ever changing customer needs for services. The impact for firms in the transport logistics service sector is the gradual transformation in the nature of their services provided, i.e. from freight forwarding to the broadened third party logistics services. An empirical research 'was carried out to examine how the freight forwarders in Hong Kong, especially those small and medium size players, view the transformation and to what extent they can adapt to the change. The survey results suggest that the intention of the sampled freight forwarders to transform into third party logistics providers is not strong and the concerns of those who have intention to transform include the availability of prerequisites such as management support, financial resources, human resources, IT capability, warehouse management system and global network etc. Implications of the study results are provided. | en_US |
