Abstract: Women who are diagnosed with breast cancer have to decide whether to have breast reconstruction other than mastectomy as the incidence of getting breast cancer increases around the world. It is worthy of studying the experiences of these women having mastectomy with or without breast reconstruction as the knowledge is limited in Hong Kong. This is a qualitative study and phenomenological approach is adopted. Four women with mastectomy and four women with mastectomy and breast reconstruction were interviewed on their surgical decision-making process, change in lived experience and body image by guiding with a semi-structured interview guide. The findings showed that the information provided was insufficient to make a well-informed decision. All women would seek second opinion before selecting their alternative. Mastectomy women with or without breast reconstruction held different viewpoints during consideration. There was no great difference between the two surgical groups except better recreational and sexual life aspects were reported in some women with breast reconstruction. In addition, the body image seemed to be better in the women with breast reconstruction. The data collected is invaluable for the health care professionals to develop a better preoperative guidance and help fellow women to make the most appropriate choice, thus facilitates higher quality of life afterwards.
