Abstract: The objective of this research is to examine the existence of gap between findings of the application of information technology on training from academic journals and the actual perception of employees in Hong Kong hotels. Another objective is to identify the difficulties/barriers that may hinder the application of information technology on training in these hotels. These objectives were achieved through questionnaires completed by the hotel employees, of rank-and-file to managerial level of staff, The finding shows significant gap between expected and actual outcome of the application of information technology on training in Hong Kong hotels from employees' perspective. Based on the research findings, there are some difficulties encountered by hotels (mainly Director of Human Resources, Training Manager and Training Department) as well as trainees (employees), such as insufficient hotel resources and lack of support/recognition from higher management levels, e.g. Executive Committees. Lack of information technology skills and knowledge that hotel employees possess is also the other barrier. With the increasing popularity of information technology usage in hotel industry, such as in Rooms Division and Food & Beverage Division, hotel training could be implemented with certain extent of information technology assistance in order to increase the effectiveness of training and enhance the learning progress of trainees. The use of information technology in training would depend mainly on the resources available in hotels, such as hardware, budget and manpower available. Besides, management support from executive level, e.g. General Managers, must be strong enough in order to boost the atmosphere of training as well as information technology training implementation in the hotels. Furthermore, training courses of information technology/computer could be organized by in-house Training Department in order to enhance the basic computer skills and knowledge of hotel staff, which would increase the perception towards information technology training. This paper also offers other suggestions for the Hong Kong hotels to cultivate training atmosphere, such as adoption of Divisional Training System and Mobile Learning Centre, as well as adopt information technology as a part of the training plan.
