dc.title | Performance evaluation of fire services systems in selected buildings with fire models | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | This work aims to evaluate the performance of fire services installation on selected existing building studying the probable fire environment using the computer models and scientific information gathered in handbooks and various published literatures. A selection of case studies since the Garley Building fire in 1996 reveals that all the major fires had two features in common: no sprinkler system; very large loss. Hence it is important that the current Fire Safety Law requires sprinklers and fire alarms system compulsory for all pre-1973 offices. Existing regulations on fire prevention, fire protection and fire fighting are comprehensive in coverage and statutory in general. It is found that "Fire Engineering Approach" will give a better solution to the design in fire safety. In this study, it is proposed to use the time base egress analysis for evacuation calculation in lieu of the discharge value calculation stipulated in the Code of Practice on the Provision of Means of Escape. The effect of sprinklers on the design fire size is demonstrated by using the computer model "DETACT". The fire environment in a 27-storey commercial building is studied by using the fire zone models CFAST 2.0. The smoke temperature and smoke layer interface heights in the corridor, the fire room and other occupied areas are analyzed having a fire size 1.5 MW and 6 MW which corresponding the design fire size with and without sprinkler installation. Finally, the history case on the International Monetary Fund Building, Washington, DC is studied for understanding the fire environment in an atrium and their interaction for cases in different fire input. | en_US |
