A software metric classification frameworken_US
The importance of software metrics is highlighted in literature. In order to promote the widespread use of software metrics, a model of software life-cycle, a software metrics classification hierarchy, and a software metric classification framework based on eleven classification dimensions have been proposed. The metrics for Software engineering, and the metrics for software quality with different software quality models have been studied. The relationships between metrics and the product entity, process entity, and resource entity are also defined in the software life-cycle model. Seventy-nine metrics covering a variety of metric types that allow people to evaluate software from different point of views are included in the classification framework. The analysis of the classification reveals that more metrics should be defined for prediction metrics, cost metrics and resource metrics. A software tool incorporating this classification framework, SWMTool, is developed. SWMTool is designed to help people to select the metrics suitable for their particular point of views when comparing and evaluating software products. Users feedback after using SWMTool shows that sufficient attention has not been received by the computer software community in Hong Kong no matter what they are - project managers, developers, programmers, purchasers, or end-users. However, the intention of the users to start using software metrics for controlling the quality of software product delivered by suppliers is encouraging. They also confirmed that SWMTool is quite easy to use.en_US
