Abstract: For service industries constrained by fixed capacity, financial operation success is often a function of the management's ability to use capacity efficiently. Yield management is a recent approach to generate maximum profit that is particularly applicable to capital-intensive service industries such as the hotel industry. Yield Management with advanced techniques did not become a common approach in the airline industry until the 1980s. The development of yield management in hotels has been inspired by the apparent success of the technique in the airline industry. Although there were plenty of research related to hotel YM, it was considered to be largely impractical until 1993. Today's highly competitive hotel market in China needs a scientific room pricing model that considers not only operating costs but also the market environment in which the hotel operates. More and more individual Chinese hotel general managers pay attention to the operating efficiency and profitability of the hotel rooms. In 1998, two newly quadratic models for yield management have been developed by Gu. The first one is Quadratic YM Model 1: Revenue optimization and another is Quadratic YM Model 2: Profit Optimization. These models may lead to optimal room revenue and profits based on room demand and variable costs in hotel industry. This study reviews the two quadratic models for yield management, and to test the models with real individual hotel data to see if the mode-calculated optimal room rates can improve room revenue and profits of Chinese hotel. Based on the result of study the researcher tries to validate practicability of Yield Management model for yield management in Chinese hotel operation.
