dc.title | A junior MRP II development : a case study | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP II) has been widely implemented in different manufacturing industries and proven to very successful, However, a good MRP II system could be very expensive and thus it is still not affordable by most small manufacturing enterprises (SMEs) in Hong Kong. When using an information system (IS) such as MRP II, we all believed that a Graphical User Interface (GUI) is more easy to learn and to use. According to some experts, a GUI system not only reduces training cost but also increases user productivity and user satisfaction. Therefore, as Windows-based operating systems (OS) became more and more popular, the old text-based MRP II systems have been ported to or re-built for GUI platforms, such as Microsoft Windows. For software development, we have different traditional methods available. But, when we study more detailed on these traditional methods, we find that they may not be 100 percent suitable for the development of a MRP II with GUI because they were not originally designed for that. So, we don't just simply take any one of these methods for this project. Instead, we would propose another alternative approach which is a Five-phase Iterative Development Method. Combined the good practices from various traditional methods, we hope that we can make this method a better approach to GUI application development. As the name implied, the proposed development process includes five development phases: Analysis, Design, Implementation, Evaluation and Testing. To illustrate how we can apply this method in a real life application, we have developed a Junior MRP II (JMRP) for a SME in Hong Kong. As for a research project, in the following chapters, we will present the development process in a form of case study. | en_US |
