Base isolated structures : a view on reliability and affordabilityen_US
It is a tough challenge for engineers to design a completely reliable earthquake-resistant structure against random ground motion of earthquake. From the earthquake engineering point of view, the design parameters that characterize the ground motion will be the amplitude, frequency content and duration. The basic concept of seismic isolation design is to reduce the transmission of the earthquake forces and energy to the structure through a flexible isolation device; whereas conventional structures withstand earthquake forces through strength and non-reversible ductile deformation. Although the energy transmitted to the structure is substantially reduced under a typical design scenario, the base isolated structure is more susceptible to long period vibration especially under long duration of excitation. There are two objectives of this study : (1) To relate the vibration characteristics of ground motion on the performance of base isolated structures, (2) To propose a development guideline for the design/construction of base isolated structures. The uncertainty of ground motion characteristics and the unavailability of reliable design ground motion attributes on a specific site location remain the major difficulties in earthquake engineering; with nowadays technology, the problems of long period ground motion is still a big concern of BIS. To alleviate and overcome the limitations of the base isolated structure, a development methodology that emphasizes the proper integration of various fields in earthquake engineering may provide constructive measures to the potential problems encountered in the base isolated structure construction. The choice of BIS over conventional seismic-resistant structures is not only based on the conception on seismic demand reduction, but also on the differences between performance, manageability against earthquake ground motion, cost of construction, repairs and maintenance. The performance of any isolation device does not relies on its material properties alone, but also depends on its durability, loading history, environmental factors, dynamic degradation as well as the need for vibration control devices. Based on the facts that base isolation systems are critical structural elements in base isolated structures, readily accessible design data are essential for engineers in their project design and prototyping/fabrication/quality testing compliance are routine procedures in the manufacturing of the devices, a framework of selection on base isolation system is proposed to create an affordable, cost-effective earthquake-resistant design of base isolated structures. In summary, the major contributions of this thesis may be categorized as follows : (1) Improving the reliability and standard of quality issues of the base isolated structures, (2) Enhancing the asset value of city government, entrepreneur and home owners, (3) Enhancing the cost-effectiveness, efficiency in implementing a base isolation system and the engineering design aspect of base isolated structures, (4) The need for continuous improvement that in turn enhance the future prospect and opportunities for future development on base isolation system.en_US
