dc.title | Effects of interferential therapy for pain reduction in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | Interferential Therapy (IFT) has been popularly used in physiotherapy field in treating many medical conditions, but previous published studies are scant and there has been little evidence in support. Osteoarthritic (OA) Knee is one of the common and highly recurrent problems in the population of middle to old age. The aims of this study are to evaluate the efficacy of IFT in pain reduction to patients with osteoarthritic knee and to evaluate the difference between bipolar and quadripolar IFT application methods. 27 subjects (3 men, 24 women; 64.5 +-7.7 yr: ranging from 44 to75) diagnosed with osteoarthritic knee were recruited and randomly assigned to three treatment (quadripolar, bipolar and placebo) groups. The subjects in all three treatment groups all received 8 sessions of exercise therapy and either quadripolar, bipolar or placebo IFT. IFT in 100 Hz was applied for 15 minutes at each session for the quadripolar and bipolar treatment groups. 3 outcome measurement methods were implemented: knee range of motion was measured; visual analog scale (VAS) was used to assess pain intensity in level ground walking upstairs, downstairs, squatting and running; and "time up and go test" was applied to measure the subjects' functional mobility The baseline, mid-term and post-intervention assessments were conducted in the lst, 5th and 8th treatment sessions. The knee pain reduction effects and difference in bipolar and quadripolar IFT were statistically analysed by 2-way Mixed Model Repeated Measure ANOVA. Results showed that there was a significant within-groups difference in all three treatment groups with p<0.05. However, there is no significant difference between-groups in relation to the three treatment groups. Time or exercise may have significant effect in OA knee pain relief Inclusion, the result of this study could not show significantly that quadripolar and bipolar IFTs were superior treatment methods than exercise therapy in terms of OA knee pain reduction effect. | en_US |
