Abstract: | The aim of this research is to investigate, through the use of prototyping, how information systems can facilitate the decision making for the tax professionals. Among different kinds of taxes, the study focuses on the chargeability to profits tax. The research explores the feasibility of using expert system technology to build Chargeability Systems so that the assessing officers in the Inland Revenue Department can speedily draw a conclusion on the chargeability to profits tax. Case-based reasoning is chosen to represent the domain knowledge and the software tool ESTEEM will be used to develop a mini-size prototype to check whether the proposed concept could be applied and check whether the decision making on the chargeability of profits tax could be assisted by the application of information system. After the evaluation of the prototype by the potential users, the usefulness of the prototype is confirmed. Although the prototype required further improvements, the domain knowledge in this research has explored the idea representing tax cases by knowledge-base of case-based reasoning. |
