dcterms.abstractPurpose of the Study The purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of using a fuzzy expert system to assist in environmental auditing of an office-typed working area, in particularly, the analysis of audit findings. A program will be developed, with the help of the expert system shell KAPPA, to demonstrate its feasibility. Environmental Audit Environmental audit is a process to determine the environmental performance in the working areas of an organization. The process requires collection of information about the working areas (or the audit sites), analysis of the audit findings, making recommendations on the necessary improvement actions and prioritizing them. The environmental audits are conducted by the professionals called environmental auditors. Fuzzy Expert System Fuzzy expert system is the application of fuzzy logic in the expert system. The reasons of using fuzzy expert system for the environmental auditing are as follows: i. Use of Expert System It is intended to develop a system which contains sufficient knowledge to interpret and analyse the audit findings. An expert system is a suitable tool to achieve this purpose. ii. Use of Fuzzy Logic The knowledge of an expert system is presented in the form of rules. The rules in the expert system for environmental auditing contains linguistic terms which traditional expert system cannot handle accurately. Fuzzy logic is considered to be a solution to handle those linguistics descriptions (or fuzzy variables). System Analysis and Design - The system is a frame-based expert system. - An expert system shell called KAPPA is used for developing the system. It is a frame-based expert shell. The fuzzy rules (knowledge) and fuzzy variables are programmed in the expert shell while the information relating to the environmental issues and the audit sites are retrieved from the database files in DBase IV format. Results and Conclusion - An empirical case was designed to test the fuzzy expert system. The results obtained by the fuzzy expert system were compatible with the ones obtained from the traditional methods of analysis adopted by environmental auditors. - The results obtained by the traditional methods can only be used for categorizing into different classes of impacts (High, Moderate, Low) but have difficulty in setting priority. This is because the results bear no physical meanings and cannot be compared with one another, it is for the environmental auditors to set the priorities based on his own experience. Fuzzy logic provides a more sensible way to capture this knowledge and hence the developed fuzzy expert system produces results which can be used for setting priorities to the environmental impacts and thus the recommended actions.en_US
