A study of the applicability of JIT principles in parallel import retail industryen_US
The phenomenon of parallel imports- the importation of genuine goods for resale by an agent other than the local authorized distributor is one that has gained increasing prominence in Hong Kong nowadays. An attempt has been made in this paper to review the literature available on Just-In-Time purchasing with an objective to explore its applicability in parallel import retail context and to solve their logistics problems. In addition, some managerial insight and future research directions on the principle of Just-In-Time purchasing in the industry are provided. With the reference to the relevant theories of principles of Just-in-time, the author is going to explore the application of Just-In-Time purchasing via data collected from interviews with two influential industries practitioners. Based on the interview results, the author proposes Just-In-Time purchasing practices to SS Cosmetics Company for implementation. For those parallel import players intending to implement JIT purchasing, this study also raises some critical issues about the extent to Just-in-time purchasing implementation. These include the imbalance of benefit gain between the retailers and vendors, which may endanger their long-term partnership. Also, the importance of performance measurement system and Information Technology to the success of JIT purchasing implementation is another issues to be considered.en_US
