Computer-aided frequency-domain modelling and simulation of switching DC-DC convertersen_US
This thesis addresses the analytical modeling of switching DC-DC converters to account for their nonlinear responses due to both control signal and supply voltage input. The research objectives are aimed at the generalization of Volterra functional series in the modeling of switching power converters converters operating in both continuous and discontinuous mode, together with the development of an symbolic software program written in "Mathematica". The modeling technique is verified by application to the study of PWM boost, buck and buck-boost converters. Examples focusing on the effects of phase differences in tones, enlarged control signals and reduced switching frequency are investigated. Two sets of symbolic software programs are developed to investigate the frequency response of switching power converters in 'continuous' and 'discontinuous' conduction modes. The proposed modeling approach can provide an analytical model for the nonlinear output response and generate a frequency output spectrum in less than a minute. The simulation is much faster than PSpice simulation. The simulation method, based on the extension of Volterra functional analysis to nonlinear systems with two independent inputs. By applying the extended Volterra functional series, the converter output response is expressed as a summation of n th-order nonlinear transfer functions, which can then be determined by explicit and recursive formulae. The modeling approach not only predicts various higher harmonic frequency components, but also provides information about the intermodulation frequency components. Chapter 1 : contains a review of the available literature on models of DC-DC converters, application of Volterra functional series in nonlinear circuits. Chapter 2 : contains the derivation of Volterra transfer functions. Chapter 3 : contains the derivation of 1st, 2nd and 3rd order nonlinear output responses. Chapter 4 : describes the formulation of Volterra transfer functions in continuous and discontinuous conduction mode based on state-space equations. Chapter 5 : exemplifies the proposed approach by application to the study of PWM boost, buck and buck-boost converters. Chapter 6 : gives the final conclusions on the major contributions of the thesis and suggestions for further development.en_US
