| dcterms.abstract | Internet commerce is becoming increasingly popular because it provides a cost-effective way to sell different types of goods and services anywhere and anytime. Payment is an important requirement for Internet commerce. Currently credit cards are the most commonly used payment method. While they are simple to use, there are some concerns on security. These concerns may hinder the growth of Internet commerce. Although the secure electronic transaction (SET) protocol has been developed to support secure credit card payment, the solution is not portable. Moreover, it is preferable to have a cash-like payment system on the Internet. In this project, different types of Internet Payment Systems are studied and compared. Furthermore we have developed a Java card based payment system and built a prototype to show its basic functions. Java card is chosen because it is portable and extensible. Our payment system allows two parties on the Internet to transfer "electronic money" to each other. Five implementation models have been studied and tested to cater for different needs. In general, there are tradeoffs between security and efficiency. In this thesis, the protocol for each model is presented and the performance of the payment system is evaluated. | en_US |
