dc.title | TQM in software development and maintenance | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | With the progress of information technology, the number of software products has increased exponentially and the quality management of software products is essential. Since the process of development and maintenance of software is quite different from that of most other types of industry, it is necessary to study and identify the issues and establish an appropriate quality management system to assure software quality. This thesis aims to investigate the current software situation in Hong Kong's organisations by conducting a survey. The study is based on the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) originated by SEI. Questionnaires have been sent to sixty companies in Hong Kong including software vendors or multinational firms with large IT teams. The result is then summarized and analyzed to identify the weak areas for improvement. In the research, a comparison has been made to study the differences between hardware manufacturing and software development processes. Traditional quality assurance techniques are reviewed to determine how well they can be applied in software development processes. The main theme of this thesis is to provide recommendations to Hong Kong software companies on how to achieve better software quality through TQM. Methodologies such as CMM, ISO 9000, and critical TQM elements - total involvement, continuous process improvement and customer focus - will be discussed to establish the ways they can be used to improve the current software situation. Furthermore, some tools and processes as well as their implementation method will be suggested to ensure that the recommendations can be carried out successfully. | en_US |
