Abstract: This study attempts to introduce the techniques of knowledge engineering into the conventional CAD system for structural engineering design. To study the problem, the modeling of design activities and the system architecture of CAD system is investigated. In the study of the model of design activities, an object-oriented model of the design is proposed based on the nature of the design objects. The design model is further developed for structural engineering design. In the proposed model, the hierarchical nature of structures and the different stages of structural engineering design are taken into account. A system architecture for CAD system in structural engineering design is then developed using the object model of design and the system architecture for CAD system in general. A prototype software for the design of plane steel truss is built in the study to check the system architecture developed. The system architecture for an intelligent CAD system in structural engineering is proposed by modifying the system architecture for the conventional CAD system. This approach is selected in order to simulate the possible conversion of the existing CAD system into a new system which is able to take up more intellectual duties in the design activity of structural engineering. Again, a prototype software for the design of plane steel truss is built for checking the validity of the conversion suggestion.
