Abstract: | In the 21st century, competition has increased due to more globalization and more demanding customers. Many local practitioners are suffering from heated global competition, increasing demand under the E-Business environment. To survive and face the challenge, the author have started launching a program in his company since 1999, to develop an IT/IS platform to support the e-business operation for a global Micro-Universal Motor Manufacturer located in Hong Kong. (In this paper this manufacturer is named as "ZZ" for confidential reason). The ZZ has more than 40 years industrial experience to produces wide ranges of universal motor and micro-motors for various applications, fields such as Automotive, Home Appliance, Personal Care, Business Equipment as well as Power Tools. To survive the intense competition; particular the China's motor manufacturing whom providing low cost and fast delivery products, ZZ intended to improve the performance by adapting new management philosophies such as B2B to extend the enterprise operation. The E-business was identified as the key challenge to ZZ and forced it to adapt the electronics communication and abandon traditional manual approach to face today's competition. The other side, it's quality concerns are driven by its focus on improving customers' satisfaction by eliminating non-value-added processes and streamlining new product development process. The insight of the IT/IS platform for E-strategy is to adapt a Dynamic and Electronics business model, through a communication platform, link up ZZ's inter-departments as well as its strategy paiters, suppliers and relate working partners. The aims are to empower the employees, enhance corporate memories thus eventually establish an enterprise tmnsformation to re-invent the manufacturing value chain to face the e-business challenges. There are numerous approaches available to adapt quality improvement programs, knowledge sharing, as well as e-business. In this thesis, the experience on the adaptation of KMS with QFD for e-business are embedded in the reference-site ZZ via industrial practice plus the insight provided from academic field. The tools have been used including KMS model combining a QFD model through electronics data flow infrastructure to fulfil e-business challenge. The project successfully adapts the concept of KMS with QFD system and a prototype of an Internet based product platform embedding KIMS with QFD was implemented in a small business group, named Integrated QFD Knowledge System (IQKS). After one-year industrial practice in ZZ - engineering division with its selected partners, a virtual dynamic product platform was formulated under the E-catalog nature. Customer was satisfied with the IQKS in terms of a TQRDC survey (Technology, Quality, Response, Delivery, and Cost). ZZ has successfully experienced an internet-based working approach (engineering, business) and satisfy the customer by providing a low cost and reliable solution by using the IQKS as the tool for design and IT communication platform. Both the Customer and ZZ's Employees were empowered. A budget of USD $300,000.00 was officially released by the Managing Director in 15 April 2001, who acted as the key driver to encourage the system rollout within and outside ZZ. The Engineering Director and the Author was authorized and appointed as the champions. This makes a significant contribution to the application intelligence. The collaboration between academics and industries practices through the author were a win-"win - win- win" project. The academic and the company gained mutual benefits to sustain the momentum of exploring the windows of opportunity to continue the project, the author got promoted from the original post of Leading Engineer to Business Development Manager. The project is continuing in ZZ Company as well as extending in Academic Field. Mr. A. Chan, Quality Engineer in ZZ as well as the MSc. student in Manufacturing Engineering, City University of Hong Kong, is working on the dissertation title of "Knowledge Management System for New Product Design". |
