dcterms.abstractThis MSc dissertation presents a study of the daylighting performance in atria by using scale-modeling technique. Using of daylight has existed during most of architectural history. In the recent years, development of atrium has become a popular architectural trend in Hong Kong buildings. An atrium has numerous features that can effectively provide pleasant and comfortable environment while allowing opportunities for significant energy savings. Therefore, daylight is one important element in atria design. Most of the previous papers were published to compare the performance between different daylight factor models & summarizes the research study results of different people about investigating the daylighting of atrium spaces. However, those studies do not research the effect of variations of wall reflectance (such as building components and/or colour) to the daylighting performance for the same atrium configuration. On the other hand, there is no known research about the daylighting performance of Hong Kong atrium building under different glazing window configurations. This dissertation is a research report of daylighting performance study in Hong Kong atrium building. The study was based primarily upon the direct measurement & calculation of daylight factor. Three atrium scale models were constructed to represent the 3 different configurations: namely cubic, high and flat of atrium buildings in Hong Kong. The tests were conducted under various wall reflectance and window configuration conditions to see their effects on the daylighting performance in an artificial sky environment. The daylighting performance within each scale model was evaluated against different window arrangement and interior surface colour. Detailed analysis of the contribution from sky component and internally reflected component to the daylight factor in each case was included. The impact of sky luminance distribution was also commented in the study. Guidelines of the daylight factor distribution for each type of Hong Kong atrium buildings were established for architect, interior designer and lighting designer to determine the related finishing work, decoration & electric lighting arrangement.en_US
