dc.title | An experimental study on evaporation of water spray | en_US |
dcterms.abstract | Sprinkler system is one of the most important fire protection systems for a building. The water flow rate of sprinkler is designed to be constant following the common practice of fire services installation in case of a fire in a building. Water spray discharged from a sprinkler would be evaporated partially and the expected cooling effect on the fire cannot be achieved. In this project, water spray was discharged at different flow rates onto a hot plate at different surface temperatures. The retained water volume was measured and the evaporation rate was estimated under various conditions. Designing water flow rate for a sprinkler system should take into account the evaporation rate to ensure that the sprinkler system has adequate water for the cooling effect in case of a tire. When the water spray is discharged onto the burning material, high temperature steam would be generated, thus hurting people trapped in a fire. Review of the relevant Code of Practice and regulations for the design of water sprinkler system shows that evaporation rate and condensing droplets are not mentioned and included. Therefore, the results and observations of steam are reported. | en_US |
