| dcterms.abstract | Budget hotels have been in existence in the US and Europe for over 40 years, but yet, this hotel product has only recently filtered into Asia Pacific, and very little literature has been written on this subject matter. Meanwhile, the growing number of Mainland Chinese travellers in Hong Kong has been welcomed by many, but the hotel industry has benefited little. A report issued by The Federation of Hong Kong Hotel Owners in November 2005 stated that only 26% of Individual Visit Scheme travellers and 40% of non-Individual Visit Scheme travellers would choose commercial accommodations during their stay in Hong Kong. Therefore, it is safe to assume the product profile or price of Hong Kong's current hotel supplies are not attractive enough. In order to attract more Mainland Chinese travellers to stay in a Hong Kong hotel, this study is initiated as an attempt to find out their hotel selection criteria and create a budget hotel profile suitable for this market. An interview-administered questionnaire survey was conducted at a number of tourist hotspots in October 2005. A total of 300 Mainland Chinese travellers were surveyed. From the data collected, a first-attempt profile of a budget hotel has been created for the Mainland Chinese market. Implications and recommendations for further studies were presented at the end of this study. | en_US |
