dcterms.abstractThe impact of Internet in our daily lives, in many of our commercial endeavors and in society generally has been significant. From a commercial perspective, the industries that are being affected most are those that are in the information and transaction intensive sector, in particular, those where a product purchase or a transaction can be fulfilled online. Traditional retailing activities through branch networks will give way to e-commerce. Web GIS will provide more customer choice, higher revenues and a more dynamic and competitive industry. In the face of competition, the utility was compelled to operate more like a business. CLP Power is to provide asset information to emergency service workers, developers, architects, surveyors, designers and plumbers who need to know where cable lines enter proposed or existing building sites. In current paper map environment, users spend a lot of time to search and locate the required information from various places. The company wanted to reduce the expenses of providing information to users without increasing their financial burden. After examining more expensive alternatives, the company decided to publish the contents of its GIS on a World Wide Web site. Its own employees and field offices could access the system, named Web GIS, via an Intranet, and outside customers would log in through as Internet service provider. The dynamic or "live" nature of the system means that GIS functionality is extended to Web users, allowing them to scroll through maps and query databases attached to the map graphics. In other words, customers aren't simply viewing an illustration that merely represents data in the GIS; they are directly accessing graphical and statistical information from the GIS itself. Segregation of facilities into different levels is a great concern because users can then at their own wish, turn on and off the different layers of facilities to view. The street locating function enables the field engineer to easily locate the area of their field of interest. The quality of plotting of the Web system is the most important as it will eventually replace the current paper map. Users can then customise plots by specifying different criteria. This applies to the 'What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get.' In order to assess the suitability of the back-end server package for AM/FM/GIS intranet web application, a visit to Hong Kong TeleCom company and China Gas company were made to experience the customization effort, data linkage and implementation strategy.en_US
