A study on the impact of electronic communication in a higher education instituteen_US
The nature of management is communication intensive as managers have to establish and maintain complex communication networks for performing their work. The traditional way of communication to share information internally by exchanging paperwork, using telephone calls, and/or through meetings has found to be inefficient and in fact, electronic mail is becoming the primary tool for exchange messages in many business organizations and is causing major changes by changing the nature of the communication process and the time needed to complete the process. However, even networking has been a major technological trend for higher education institutes, electronic communication is not as popular as it is used in the business operations. Based on the theories of media characteristics which suggest that media differ in their appropriateness and utility for different tasks and that the choice of communication media reflects the user's belief in the capability of the media in matching the task information requirement, this study, through the use of questionnaire survey, aims to find out the level of acceptance of E-mail by the management of the University of Hong Kong, the general perception on the effectiveness of E-mail and to explore the factors that may affect the perceived effectiveness of E-mail in improving efficiency. Findings from the study suggest that respondents are generally in agreement with the efficiency gain from using E-mail such as sending messages at a faster way and to a larger population; elimination of phone tags, breaking down the distance and time barrier of telephone calls and reducing interruption to work. However, respondent's perception on the effectiveness of E-mail does not necessarily consistent with his behaviour in the choice of communication media. Management might need to promote and encourage the use of E-mail vigorously in order to realize the merits and efficiency gain associated with this new mode of communication with emphasis especially among administrative staff members who are found to be less receptive to the use of E-mail.en_US
