Implementation of environmental management system - ISO 14001 in Hong Kongen_US
This study aims to analyze the key concerns of local large organizations on the implementation of EMS, to understand how and why EMS is implemented in the organizations and to examine the potential benefits and difficulties encountered in the implementation of ISO 14001 EMS in Hong Kong. A questionnaire survey was conducted to representative local companies which are implementing or will implement the Environmental Management System (EMS). The aims of the survey are to investigate the procedures, methods, benefits and difficulties during the implementation of the EMS. Additional information has been obtained by carrying out an extensive literature review, attending seminars and site visits. Based on the results obtained from this study, the major benefits of implementing EMS in local large companies include cost saving by reducing consumption of raw material and energy, improvement of company's image, compliance of required legislations and requirements, and raising environmental awareness of employees. At the same time, they also experience some difficulties including expenditure for initial set-up, lacking of resources and experience, etc. This study shows that a number of the local large companies are willing to further extend their achievement in good quality management to a sound environmental management system. Conclusions and recommendations are given in this report to assist local companies which are interested in implementing ISO 14001 EMS in their business. Examples of environmental management manual and ISO 14001 self-assessment & gap analysis are also provided as references for implementation of the standard.en_US
