To investigate the usage pattern of broad spectrum antibiotic therapy among public and private physicians in Hong Kongen_US
The usage pattern of antimicrobial agents among government and private physicians in Hong Kong is investigated. Respiratory tract infection is the most common type of infection with a prevalence rate over 45% in both sectors. Quinolones is used as a first line agent in the treatment of urinary tract infections. There is reservation in using quinolones for the treatment of lower respiratory tract infections and severe infections. Physicians perceived that cephalosporins and broad spectrum penicillins are significantly more useful than quinolones especially in the public hospitals. Physicians from both sectors expect new quinolones to possess a more complete spectrum of activity and improved safety profile. Pertaining to the selection criteria which physician consider when choosing an antibiotic treatment, the three most important criteria are drug efficacy, risk of side effects and range of indications. Personal experience is only ranked as the fourth criterion. Most physicians do not perceive resistance as a crucial element for their prescribing decision. The top four aspects of pharmaceutical manufacturers affecting physicians' choice of antibiotics are the same for both sectors. They are quality of clinical papers, research efforts, general reputation and symposia organized by drug firms. Qualifications of medical representatives is ranked as moderate importance. To promote moxifloxacin (new quinolone good at RTI & SSTI) successfully, we should focus on respiratory tract infections and make use of good clinical reprints, organizing symposia, establish good image of company and improving qualifications of medical representatives.en_US
