| Abstract: | Hotel industry is booming in Hong Kong, Macau and Mainland China in recent years. The shortage of labor market is becoming fierce, especially the qualified people for the hotel industry. However, hotel managers show minimum interesting in hiring the graduates from the hospitality program. This paper sets out to study the leadership competencies on postgraduate students in Hong Kong. Comparing the expectations of hotel managers for postgraduate students and the postgraduate students' learning when they were studying the program, the 'gaps' showed that the postgraduate students are weak on some of the leadership competencies. The research adopted a leadership competencies model from the lodging industry. Eight factors (47 attributes) were examined in this study, namely self-management, strategic positioning, implementation, critical thinking, communication, interpersonal, leadership and industry knowledge. The findings revealed the results as: (1) Hotel managers' expectations are becoming higher and higher, they focus on the students' capabilities rather than high qualification. (2) Students' learning can not meet the expectation of hotel managers, especially in the skill of 'leadership', 'self-management' and 'critical thinking'. (3) Mature students emphasize on individual career development, while no working experience students emphasize on academic study. (4) The diversity study environment benefit to the non-local students. It was recommended that the findings would beneficial to the educators, industry recruiter and hospitality postgraduate students for reference. |
