dcterms.abstractThe design of lighting aims at producing good visibility given the requirements of sports played. In general, the prime requirement of most sports in terms of visibility is an adequate level of illumination. Other factors such as glare, colour rendering and uniformity must also be taken into account for better visual performance. For current lighting design practice, energy efficiency is also a major concern accomplished with improved illuminances and visual performance. Latest developed light sources like T5 high output fluorescent lamps with better efficacies will certainly become the trend in the new indoor sports hall lighting design. This dissertation includes an evaluation of lighting performance (e.g. luminous efficacy, horizontal illuminance, colour rendering properties, glare, etc) and user satisfaction of the T5 high output fluorescent lighting system with comparison to the old high intensity discharge lighting installation. The study of the energy retrofit for this new T5 lamps installation also forms a part of this dissertation. All relevant background information, technical details of the T5 lamp, luminaire, its electronic ballast and the life cycle cost analysis will be discussed and illustrated in this report. Updated illuminance, recommendations from the CIBSE guide are also introduced to provide illumination criteria and key elements in design considerations necessary to achieve quality lighting installations. The feasibility of using T5 high output fluorescent lamps in the indoor sports halls is studied to ensure that they can follow these design recommendations.en_US
