| dcterms.abstract | In this study, short education program for families of people with schizophrenia is described and evaluated in terms of knowledge about schizophrenia and critical attitude toward relatives with this mental illness in the present study. Experimental approach with 'pretest-posttest control group design' was used to address the research question. Convenience sampling was used in this study. Families who met the inclusion criteria were recruited and they were randomly assigned to the experimental group (n = 22) and control group (n = 19). Families of the experimental group were given the educational intervention, while families in the control group received the current conventional services. The educational intervention was implemented to families before the home leave of the patient. The 'Knowledge about Schizophrenia Questionnaire' and the 'Family Attitude Scale' were used for measuring the variables. Result indicated that there was a significant difference between the families of experimental group and the control group in the change of knowledge only. The change of critical attitude was found in families of experimental group only but the change was due to chance as compared with the control group. The correlation between the knowledge and attitude was poor. Results suggested that the education program enhances the families' knowledge but its longer term effects need to be further evaluated. The insignificant result in the change of critical attitude may be related to the sample size, characteristics of attitude and the design of the program. It is recommended to increase the sample size to examine the families' critical attitude in future study. The implication of the result in relation to nursing practice suggested that the education program is effective and practical for frontline psychiatric nurses to implement the program in clinical settings. | en_US |
