dcterms.abstract | The purpose of this study was to establish the reliability and validity of the motor-reduced part of the Chinese Version of the Devtlopmental Test of Visual Perception-2nd Edition (DTVP-2) for preschoolers in Hong Kong. Content validity and construct validity were examined, while the reliability was evaluated by test-retest reliability, intra-rater reliability and internal consistency. This study was done in two phases. Phase one was an examination of the content validity. Panel review was conducted to evaluate the translated test instruction and content equivalence. Phase two was an investigation of construct validity and reliability. Forty-eight children (24 boys and 24 girls) aged 4 through 6 were recruited through convenience sampling. Results from the expert panel review suggested that the test instructions generally showed fluency and correctness, and equivalence to the semantic meaning of the original version (with 80% to 100% agreement). The subtests were also reviewed as relevant and representative to assess visual perception of Hong Kong children (with 80% to 100% agreement). The test and retest reliability for the four subtests ranged from .69 to .92. Similar results were yielded in the intra-rater reliability that ranged from .68 to .93. Both the reliability coefficients of the visual closure test were relatively low (.69 and .68.) Hong Kong children seemed to show some difficulties on this item that appears demanding for more abstract thinking. Cronbach's Alpha for examining the internal, consistency was .74, while the Pearson Correlation among the four subtests ranged from .14 to .49, which suggested that the DTVP-2's motor-reduced subtests are unidimensional and yet measuring separate abilities of visual perception. Age and preschool grade difference were found in all motor-reduced subtests except for the form constancy test. Gender was shown to have insignificant relationship with the children's performance. Finally, the performance of Hong Kong children was found to be significantly better than United States counterparts (especially on the position in space and form constancy subtests) except for the 4 years age group on the figure-ground test and 5 years age group on the visual closure test. The factors account for the better performance may include traditional Hong Kong Chinese child-rearing method, early schooling, intensive academics and handwriting training, unique Chinese orthography and test-taking behaviors of Hong Kong children. | en_US |
