Abstract: Owing to the scarcity of level land in Hong Kong for property development, earth retaining structures such as concrete walls, crib walls, gabion walls, reinforced fill walls, cantilever walls, counterfort walls, buttressed walls, caisson walls, bored pile walls are very common. They are widely used for support of cuts or fills for further construction. During the selection of an earth retaining structure, the engineer has often to reason with incomplete and imprecise data. He also has to conduct the selection by using empirical rules that have been developed from experience. The aim of this research is to design and build an expert system prototype - Selection of Earth Retaining Structures (SEREST) - to provide a preliminary selection on the commonly used earth retaining structures for the engineer for further consideration. The system is expected to model and perform the problem solving behaviour of a professional engineer in selecting the appropriate earth retaining structures. Expert system shell EXSYS Professional(r) is used to develop the backward chaining knowledge base as well as the user interface. Fuzzy rules and fuzzy inference engine written in standard Pascal are then linked to the EXSYS Professional(r) as external modules. All these have been verified and validated by using examples from literatures and real life. SEREST is the first prototype expert system in Hong Kong for selection of earth-retaining structures. It demonstrates the possibility of using expert systems in some known and structured engineering problem. It is hoping that this prototype system can arouse the interest of engineers and can spread the popularity of using expert systems in construction industry.
