dc.titleThe effect of an extended therapy program in geriatric patients with hip fractureen_US
dcterms.abstractAn extended therapy program was developed in Kowloon Hospital which aimed at improving the mobilization and self- care abilities of patients with hip fracture, by consolidating the therapy sessions in ward Participants who had Abbreviated Mental Test above 4 and American Society of Anesthesiologists Grades 1 to 3 and aged above 65 were selected. A total of 33 female participants were recruited with 17 in the experimental group and 16 in the control group. The experimental group participants undergone the extended therapy program and the control group participants undergone the conventional therapy program. The two groups were measured by the Barthel Index and the Functional Independence Measure on admission and upon discharge. Net treatment effect score was also calculated. Length of stay in the rehabilitation unit and the subjective comment on the degree of satisfaction were compared between the two groups separately. Results show that the extended therapy program significantly improved the daily living activities of the participants. The experimental group participants had a significantly better functional performance as measured by the Barthel Index and the Functional Independence Measure than the control group participants. In addition, the experimental group participants' had a significantly shorter length of stay in the rehabilitation unit than the control group participants. The overall subjective comment of the extended therapy program was also positive and promising among experimental group participants.en_US
