| dcterms.abstract | Hong Kong's poor record of industry safety is in marked contrast to the success of its economy and the sophistication of its works force. For this reason, safety is gradually being given attention and handled in a managerial approach. This MSc dissertation examined the current situation of safety management in the Hong Kong construction industry and investigated how management enhanced construction site safety. This was done by conducting an extensive survey on the attitude of the Hong Kong contractors towards safety management and analyzing the effectiveness of various safety management measures in improving safety performance using the data supplied by the respondents. The findings of this survey were compared with the research results from Western developed countries to determine the applicability of the Western safety management practices. As a case study, the experiences in the safety management of the Airport Core Programme ( ACP ) projects have also been studied with a view to seeing how and which areas safety management has enhanced construction site safety for ACP projects. Performance measures for assessing safety performance and safety management effort were developed based on the findings of the survey and the case study. Lastly, a correlation between safety management effort and safety performance was established based on the safety data of ACP contracts. From that correlation, the amount of safety management effort in quantitative term to be paid by the contractors to achieve a prescribed safety target was evaluated. | en_US |
